Khmer and Mixed Tracks

Different Language Tracks

From June 2006, new students can follow one of three different track

1.      The E-track is a continuation of the present programmes, where courses are conducted in English:
    • to be able to enter the E-track, undergraduate students must pass a Placement Exam to demonstrate their proficiency in English.
2.      A K-track will be introduced, where our existing undergraduate programmes will instead be conducted in Khmei:
    • assigned reading materials for the E-track will be translated into Khmer;
    • however, undergraduate students will have to study some modules of English as a Second Language (ESL) as part of their degree programmes.
3.      A \'mixed\' (M-) track will be also introduced for undergraduates:
    • the first part of the degree programme will follow the K-track;
    • based on their performance in ESL, students will be given the opportunity to complete their programmes on the E-track.
Because of the ESL requirement for the undergraduate K- and M-tracks, the number of credits for these students to graduate has been increased from 70 to 75 credits for Associate students, and from 125 to 135 credits for Bachelor\'s students. This allows students on these tracks to take some modules (6 credits each, because of the greater number of contact hours) of our English as a Second Language (ESL) program as part of their degree requirements (students enter the program at a level appropriate to their existing grasp of English), in addition to their other electives.

Students joining the E-track also have to do the extra credit hours. They are encouraged to use the additional credit requirement to study another Asian language (e.g. Mandarin, Japanese or Bahasa Indonesia), and thereby further enhance their competitive advantage in the regional market-place.
Undergraduate students on the K- and M-tracks will have to take some modules (6 credits each, because of the greater number of contact hours) of our newly-designed English as a Second Language (ESL) program as part of their degree requirements: students enter the ESL programme at a level appropriate to their existing grasp of English.
Undergraduate students opting for the M-track will initially work alongside K-track students for the first portion of their degree programme, until they have completed level 6 of the ESL programme; thereafter, they can move over to join the E-track for the rest of their degree programme. Timetable constraints mean that prospective Bachelor\'s students must be able to start the ESL programme at level 3 or higher; whilst the lowest entry-point for Associate students is level 5. Students then complete remaining levels of the ESL programme (6 credits for each module) over successive terms.

* Depending on the number of English as a Second Language modules which a student has to do: where less than the maximum indicated, the appropriate number of other electives is done instead in order to complete the total number of credits required for graduation.
New students will enter the ESL programme at different levels (based on their performance in an initial, simple placement test), and thus will first have to do different numbers of ESL modules together with courses conducted in Khmei. Accordingly, one of four different subtracks (\'tracks\' M1 to M4) will be indicated in their degree transcripts:
  • M1-track students will have to do only one term in the K-track, doing the last module (level 6) of the ESL programme together with selected courses conducted in Khmei, before switching to join the E-track for their remaining courses;
  • M2-track studentswill have to do two terms in the K-track, doing the last two modules (levels 5 and 6) of the ESL programme together with selected courses conducted in Khmei, before transfering to the E-track to do the rest of their courses;
  • and so on …
